Sources: the Paulsen Street and Broughton Street closures are from the city’s Alert Center posts of Oct. 28 for Paulsen and 37th and Broughton and Jefferson. The festival teardown closures are from the Savannah Police Department’s traffic notice of Oct. 20. The Abercorn Street closure at 57th Street, posted Aug. 27, and the Tremont Road closure, posted July 21, were on the city’s Alert Center when we last read it in full. The Alert Center did not load for us on Nov. 1, so we could not recheck those two today. Their posted end dates have not passed.
Chatham County extended the Walthour Road closure to Oct. 31 after its contractor hit unexpected site conditions. As of Nov. 1, the county had not posted that the road reopened, and its project page still lists the job as in construction. Call Chatham County Engineering at 912-652-7800 before relying on the route. Walthour Road is about 13 miles east, on Wilmington Island.
Off the list: the SCAD Film Fest closure of Abercorn Street between Broughton and Congress streets was set to end at 7 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 1, police said. The partial closure of Briarcliff Circle at Windsor Road for utility work, which the city posted Oct. 20, was expected to end Friday, Oct. 23. Chatham County’s overnight closure of Quacco Road, between Winding Way and Loch Way, was set to end at 7 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 17, the county said. The National Weather Service had no active alerts for Chatham County on Nov. 1.
Overnight state road work
Georgia DOT schedules most lane closures on state routes at night. When we checked Nov. 1, 511 listed no Savannah-area alerts; its only posted alert covered interstate closures in metro Atlanta. Recent Savannah work that has ended:
- State Route 21: overnight closures of the two left lanes northbound at Minus Avenue and southbound at Smith Road ran from 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 19, to 5 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 20, 511 showed.
- I-95 southbound at exit 94 (State Route 204, Abercorn Street Extension): the right lane was blocked for maintenance overnight Monday into Tuesday. It was no longer listed on 511 on Oct. 20.
- State Route 204 southbound at Stephenson Avenue: the right lane was blocked for road construction from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 20, 511 showed.
511 listed no full road closures in Chatham County on Nov. 1. Night work like this is often posted only a day ahead. Check 511ga.org or dial 511 before a late drive.
Coming up
- Montgomery Cross Road: the city held a community meeting Oct. 20 on redesign options for Montgomery Cross Road between Sallie Mood Drive and Abercorn Street, the next phase of its Tide to Town urban trail. It is at the planning stage; no closure is scheduled.
- Talmadge Memorial Bridge: Georgia DOT plans to replace the bridge’s cables, bearings and joints. It has said the bridge will stay open during construction, with lane closures expected in both directions. No closure dates were posted on 511 as of Nov. 1.
City projects
The city reports on its capital projects twice a year. The June 2026 report lists these road and street-side jobs:
- Truman Linear Park Trail, Phase IIB: a bike and pedestrian trail beside the Truman Parkway from DeRenne Avenue to Bee Road and 52nd Street, linking Lake Mayer to Daffin Park. Most construction is done and the contractor is working through punch-list items.
- Victory Drive corridor: median landscaping and irrigation between Ogeechee Road and Downing Avenue, done under a Georgia DOT permit.
- Little Neck Road extension: utility extensions for new apartments and businesses along Little Neck Road; construction is under way with no end date set.
- Placentia Basin drainage: remaining money is set aside to replace culverts on Sunset, Emory and Betty drives.
- LaRoche and DeLesseps avenues: widening with sidewalks and bike lanes between Waters Avenue and Skidaway Road is complete.
The city’s Savannah Under Construction map shows active city projects by location.
State projects
Georgia DOT lists every state project, with its status and contractor, in its GeoPI project search. One recent Savannah job: the I-16 interchange at State Route 307 (Dean Forest Road), where Reeves Construction widened and moved the ramps, restriped the bridge and upgraded the signals. GeoPI shows that $40 million project as 98.57% complete and its status as complete.
For anything on an interstate or a state route, 511 is the fastest check: it shows lane closures, crashes and road work in real time.
